If you’re starting a custom framing project, it helps to understand what we frame best, how our process works, and whether our materials and options are the right fit for your needs.
Custom framing is often used for items with personal or visual significance, like family photos, artwork, posters, and meaningful prints. A well-made frame helps protect these pieces while turning them into a clean, lasting display.
If you’re considering Frame It Easy, this guide will walk you through our materials, process, and specialties to help you decide if we’re the right fit for your project.
We’re probably a great fit if you’re looking for:

- an easy, fast, and affordable place to purchase custom picture frames for art less than 1/4″ thick in any size up to 42″x62.”
- a variety of quality, U.S. made frames (produced with virtually no waste) that ship anywhere in the United States and Canada.
- an option to upload your digital files for complete “ready-to-hang” print & frame fulfillment,
- an option to White Label your order, and/or use our service to aid your own business
If you’re framing bigger pieces, it helps to know your options go big, too. Our 4-ply matboards go up to 42″ x 62″ (outer dimensions), while 6-ply, 8-ply, metallic, and patterned mats go up to 30″ x 42″ (outer dimensions), so you can create a polished, custom look even for larger statement pieces!
And we’re probably not the right fit if you’re looking to:
- mailing in your art or photos to be framed
- framing items greater than 1/4″ thick (such as gallery-wrapped canvas)
- uploading digital files that are not JPEG or .PNG
- shipping outside the United States and Canada
- free shipping (Reality check: “free shipping” is never really free…)
What To Expect From Our Materials (And Experience)
When you order custom framing from us, you can expect an easy step-by-step guided process, affordable pricing, and a quality product.
Frame It Easy is built around a guided, effortless custom framing experience using quality, durable materials. Our step-by-step 3D Frame Designer helps you choose the right size, style, and options, while our made-to-order process keeps production streamlined and costs more accessible than traditional custom framing.
We focus on acid-free framing materials that balance quality, consistency, and ease of use. Our wood frames feature painted, stained, or laminate finishes for a clean, uniform look, while our metal frames are made from durable aluminum. All frames include the necessary hardware for secure display, with added support on larger sizes to help prevent bowing or warping.

Sustainability Bonus: Due to our manufacturing techniques, we produce very little scrap when making your frames — in fact, our scrap is less than 2% in an industry that averages over 20% waste! Our packaging is also custom-built and recyclable (including the plastic straps!), so you don’t have to worry about waste there, either.

What We Frame Best
Art prints, photos, drawings, posters, diplomas, puzzles, and the like are all a perfect fit for our frames.
Frame It Easy is designed for flat artwork and prints that need a precise, custom fit. Of course, we offer standard-size frames. But where we stand out is in custom sizing, specializing in made-to-order frames for non-standard dimensions. With us, you’re not limited to what’s basic. Whether your piece is slightly off-size or completely unique, you can build a frame that fits it exactly.
With today’s variety of cameras, digital formats, and art print options, most artwork no longer follows standard sizing. Our approach reflects that, giving you the flexibility to frame your work as it is, without trimming, resizing, or compromising.
Our frames are mainly made for flat pictures and art, and where we really shine is in those hard-to-find, non-standard sizes.

The Best Matting in The Game
Frame It Easy is a strong fit for projects where color accuracy and customization matter. With or Smart Color Matching tech, you can pull tones directly from your artwork or item to create a cohesive, intentional design. We offer one of the largest selections of matboard colors available, making it easier to find an exact match or create contrast where needed. This level of control helps ensure your frame complements your piece rather than competing with it.
What Is Smart Color Matching?
Smart Color Matching is our color-matching technology designed to take the guesswork out of matboard color decisions. This works for art you’re uploading yourself or framing a piece you already love. It helps you pick mat colors that complement your artwork (even if you don’t have design experience) and feel confident that your art, matboard, and frame work beautifully together.
You can explore your options through three tabs:

Classic A curated set of timeless mat colors of every shade to get you going. Perfect if you want to see some color swatches as an easy starting point.
Recommended Not sure what you want? We’ll guide you with up to 10 color suggestions based on your artwork, helping you land on a perfect color—no guesswork required.
Color Picker The fan fav! Feeling creative? Explore the full range of mat colors and fine-tune your design until it feels just right. Ideal for dialing in a specific color from your art or matching a space.
Other Things We Can Frame

While we specialize in flat artwork and prints, many less traditional items can also be framed as long as they fall within our sizing and depth guidelines.
Customers regularly frame items like cross-stitches, flags, scarves, and even lightweight jerseys. Other popular options include DIY projects like framing pressed flowers, maps, handwritten notes, certificates, magazine covers, and personal keepsakes that tell a story.
If you’re looking for inspiration, consider framing items like travel mementos, postcards, sheet music, or meaningful documents. With the right layout and materials, many flat or lightly dimensional pieces can be turned into a clean, long-lasting display.
As long as your item fits within our measurement and thickness ranges, it can likely be framed. And if you’re starting with digital artwork, you can upload your file to print and frame it in one step.

So where do I start?

Common Questions About Our Services
How large or small can my art be?
The smallest “Art Size” our frame designer can accommodate is 5″x5″, and it goes all the way up to 42″x62″. Note: 5″x5″ is the smallest frame size we can create, however, if you have a smaller piece of art, you can still frame it by adding additional matting around it.
Why don’t we accept mailed-in art?
Frames are replaceable, but a priceless photo that you have of a cherished memory may not be. And we would hate for a piece of art that you care enough about to frame to get lost or damaged in transit. Also, it’s much faster (and easier) for the art to stay safe with you, and have you add it to the frame. Rather than wait to send us art, have us frame it, and send it back, you can order a frame in the proper size and have it in your hand in about a week.
How thick can my art be?
The maximum depths our frames can accommodate are 1/8″ for our wood frames and 1/4″ for our metal frames. Due to the way our frames are constructed and the “channel” in which your art sits, we specialize in framing thinner frameables.
Our Metal frames have room for artwork up to 1/4″ thick. This includes matting, so if your frame has a single mat, the artwork shouldn’t exceed 3/16″ thick, and if it is double-matted the artwork shouldn’t exceed 1/8″ thick. The spring clips that hold your art into the frame will adjust perfectly as long as your art doesn’t exceed this thickness.
Our Wood frames have room for artwork up to 1/8″ thick if they have no mats or one mat, and up to 1/16″ if they have two mats.
What file types can we accept for digital uploads?
For any digital uploads, we can accept .JPEG and .PNG. If the file you want us to frame for you is something other than that, you would either have to source it to a different location or change the format to something we can accept (there’s software you can use to do that). We have more information on file formats in our guide to formatting digital photos.
Why don’t you offer free shipping?
“Free shipping” is often built into the product price. To offer it, companies typically raise item costs to cover shipping, which can mean you pay more overall. Instead, we keep pricing and shipping separate so you only pay for what your specific order requires, delivering more accurate and transparent value.
